Explore Beijing
Beijing has a lot to offer, from stunning landscapes and mesmerising architecture to a rich and fascinating history and world-class food. Discover the city at its finest with our curated list of unforgettable experiences.
Time-travel at the National Museum of China
Be prepared for a museum on a truly massive scale, tracing China’s history from Palaeolithic times to the present day. Set just off Tiananmen Square, close to Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing, Beijing, it houses over a million objects in its galleries. Its collections run from bronzes and lacquerware to textiles, jade and weapons, showing how society evolved under different dynasties. Its highlights are many and varied, running from a rhino-shaped wine vessel, inlaid with swirls of gold and silver, to an incredible jade and gold-thread burial suit, dating back to the Han Dynasty.
Explore the city’s Art Zone
See a different side of the city in the 798 Art Zone complex. Artists and architects have transformed its abandoned, East German-designed factories, now reinvented as galleries, studios and creative spaces. They’re interspersed with hip cafés like Voyage Coffee and Flatwhite, along with atmospheric relics like the old cranes and gasworks. The most prominent gallery is the UCCA Center For Contemporary Art, whose superb exhibitions span both Chinese and international art-world superstars. If art-lovers flock to this neighbourhood, so do influencers, keen to stage selfies by the galleries and parked-up vintage steam train. Come here for the art scene, then stay for the people-watching, lingering over lunch or drinks in the many bars and cafés.
Stroll Jingshan Park
Immediately north of the Forbidden City, and a stone’s throw from Mandarin Oriental Wangfujing, Beijing, Jingshan Park was once a private Imperial garden. These days it bustles with visitors from dawn to dusk, including practitioners of qi gong and tai chi and the exuberant ‘dancing aunties’ of Beijing. Its hilltop pagodas are the best place to get a sense of Beijing’s geography and scale, with views spanning the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and beyond. Worth visiting at any time of the year, the park is most magical in spring, when the ground is carpeted with peonies.
Hutong Tour
The hushed tranquillity of the Beijing hutongs (alleyways) is in stark contrast to the everyday bustle of the city. The historic hutongs are narrow and atmospheric streets lined by traditional courtyard homes. It is where the real mood and character of Beijing can be observed, the pace of life has changed little over the centuries.
A tour of the hutongs allows the chance to witness close up the beating heart of the capital, witnessing traditional sports such as cricket fighting and demonstrations of intricate calligraphy by masters of the ancient Chinese craft. All these Chinese skills, traditions and wisdom have been passed down over the centuries to successive generations.

All dishes are prepared a-la-carte, cooked to order, using the finest, freshest, and seasonal ingredients. A selection of dim sum dishes is served for lunch.
The stylish restaurant, known for its stunning decor and fabulous Forbidden City views, offers a new twist on classic Cantonese dishes such as Wok Fried Prawn with Spicy Sweet and Sour Sauce, Wok Fried Choi Sum with Sweet Soy Sauce and Baked Razor Clam with Spring Onion and Sea Salt.
Mandarin Grill – Contemporary New York steakhouse
Gourmands will be delighted to sample the carte in the intimate surroundings of the stunning forbidden city view restaurant, accompanied by legendary Mandarin Oriental service. Inspired by French culture and cuisine, new executive Chef Christophe Riou from Brittany has selected the finest ingredients to create inventive signature dishes and bring a personal touch to classic steakhouse favourites.
Mandarin Grill's updated menu is a modern take on the contemporary New York steakhouse, with fusion elements introduced. In order to emphasize the essence of the steakhouse concept, and the high standard of production, Chef Christophe not only selects 100% natural and additive-free charcoal, but also pays great attention to the selection of the meat.
For the selection of wines to accompany the meal, Mandarin Grill's sommelier has picked more than a hundred wines of special vintages from different origins and chateaux in the New World and the Old World, so guests have a wide range to choose from.
MO Bar – Bar and late-night lounge
MO Bar is a sophisticated cocktail bar, and late-night lounge, with superb outdoor terrace views of the iconic Forbidden City. Whether it is early evening cocktails, mid-evening catch-ups with friends, or late-night partying to a DJ soundtrack, this is the favourite bar of Beijing’s cosmopolitan crowd. A relaxed décor, carefully-curated cocktails and a fabulous Forbidden City view terrace make it a very special sunset-onwards spot.
The Library – Lounge
The Library is, as the name suggests, a haven of calm in the heart of a bustling city, with understated décor and unobtrusive service. Guests can choose from a range of teas, coffees and light snacks, or order more substantial sandwiches. The Library is the perfect place to unwind after a full day of business, sightseeing or shopping.
The Mandarin Cake Shop – Cakes & Patisseries
The classy shop is located on the second floor of the building's east wing and has a tempting range of sweet treats that are available for takeaway. Until now, the fabulous creations of the hotel's famed pastry chefs were only available in the two stylish restaurants and trendy late-night lounge; lovers of desserts will appreciate being able to pick up an order to enjoy in the office, the park, on the go, or at home.
Among the mouth-watering range on offer is The Mandarin, an exquisite pastry which contains orange, chocolate, cream and almond, along with coffee eclair, lemon tart, double chocolate tart and vanilla caramel mousse. The shop also has an enticing array of yummy cakes – just right for birthdays, and other celebrations – chocolates and macaroons, as well as freshly baked croissants, baguettes, muffins and different kinds of loaves. Naturally, there is a wide range of drinks available, including different speciality teas and coffees, juices, soft drinks and mineral water.
