Thimphu, also spelled Thimbu is the capital of Bhutan. The city, situated in the west-central part of the country, is in the Himalaya Mountains on the Raidak (also called Thimphu, or Wong) River at about 7,000 feet (2,000 metres) above sea level. The Kingdom’s capital city is home to approximately 100,000 inhabitants including the Royal family. This bustling little city is the main center of commerce, religion and government in the country.

Thimphu is the most modern city in Bhutan with an abundance of restaurants, internet cafes, nightclubs and shopping centers, however it still retains its’ cultural identity and values amidst the signs of modernization. Thimphu is one of the few towns in Bhutan that have been equipped with ATM banking facilities and is a good place to stock up on some currency.

One of the most curious features of Thimphu is that it is the only capital city in the world that does not use traffic lights. Instead a few major intersections have policemen standing in elaborately decorated booths (small pavilions), directing traffic with exaggerated hand motions. The juxtaposition of ancient tradition and modernity make Thimphu the ideal location for visitors to break away from their tour itinerary and just immerse themselves in the lifestyle of contemporary Bhutanese.

Although lacking the charm and culture associated with ancient capitals, Thimphu is well endowed with attractions. Places of interest in Thimphu: Tashichhodzong — also known as the “Fortress of the Glorious Religion”; The National Textile Museum; The Folk Heritage Museum; The National Institute for Zorig Chusum — is also known as the School of Arts and Crafts; Takin Preserve — Here you will find the rare national animal of Bhutan; Dechenphodrang — This is a monastic school with more than 450 monks currently undergoing their studies; Semtokha Dzong — It stands on a lofty ridge five miles from Thimphu town was built in 1627 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal. Other sights worth exploring in Thimphu include the National Library, the private chapel of Zangto Pelri Lhakhang, the National Institute of Traditional Medicine, the large Changlimithang Stadium and Archery Ground, the National Memorial Chorten and the Telecom Tower, which offers wonderful views of the city from over 2,000 meters.
