Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia located on the Mediterranean coast. It is the second largest Spanish city, after Madrid, with a population of 1.6 million people. The former plaza in front of the palace Plaza-del-Rey where the King and the Queen were waiting for the arrival of Christopher Columbus after his first voyage to America has now turned into a summer theatre, holding many concerts. The city has many places of interest; one of them is the “Spanish Village”, the open-air architectural museum with different quarters that replicate the style of houses and architecture from different parts of Spain. Under protection of UNESCO are architectural masterpieces by Antoni Gaudi — Church of the Sagrada Familia and Lluis Domenech i Montaner — Palau de la Musica Catalana. Medicine, design and high-end technology are the spheres Barcelona is most well-known for, due to various conferences, forums and international centers.
