The island amazing with its white sandy beaches and azure waters of the Andaman Sea is considered one of the best resorts in Thailand. It is the largest island of the country situated in 680 km to the south of Bangkok. The average annual temperature is 27C with winter being the best holiday season. However even in low season the rains on the island don’t last long and fall exceptionally at nighttime. The capital of the island, Phuket City, is situated in the southeast part of the island and has the population of 83 thousand people. The word “Phuket” in the Malaysian dialect means “mountain”. The island really resembles a mountain rising right from the sea. Its landscapes are extremely diverse with rocky highlands, long wide sandy beaches, limestone cliffs, woody hills, small river mouths, lagoons and tropical greenery of different kinds. Main resorts are located on the western coast. The southern part is occupied by beaches Patong, Kata, Karon, and to the north of them are Surin, Kamala, and Bang Tao. Here tourists can dive, play golf on the spacious green courses or go on excursions: walking in the tropical jungles, rafting, elephant riding, visiting crocodile farms and bright night dancing shows. The Andaman Coast with its tremendous underwater seascapes, coral tangles and caves seems to be made for diving. The southern coast is surrounded by coral islands, while on the north-western part there are the Similan Islands and on the south-east lay Phi-Phi Islands.
