Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto is located in the heart of Kyoto — adjacent to Nijo-jo Castle on the site of the Kyoto home of the Kitake, the executive branch of the Mitsui Family—a property the family maintained for over 250 years. The tranquility and storied history of the location is reflected in each of the guest rooms. Guests can experience Kyoto’s rich history and traditions whilst unwinding in luxurious surroundings — our unique modern take on the beauty of a Japanese room.

Accomodation
A modern reimagining of the traditional Japanese tearoom, the 161 guest rooms feature carefully chosen natural materials elevated using artisanal skills. The bathtubs are fashioned out of stone and their generous size makes them ideal for stretching out and relaxing. Some of the suite rooms feature access to a natural onsen for bathing and relaxation, sourced from an on-site spring.
Featuring some 1,300m² of Japanese stroll gardens, Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto offers a range of 5 different room types to staying guests. Many of the stone lanterns and landscape features in the gardens are artifacts from the original Mitsui home—a slice of Kyoto history. A place to experience the changing of the seasons and to enjoy fragrant flowers, the sound of water and the wind rustling leaves, the chirruping of insects to mark the passing of time.
Deluxe Room
A modern interpretation of a Japanese tearoom, in the tradition of the Way of Tea. Embodying the spirit of omotenashi — the Japanese art of hospitality, the interior design is a Japanese space harmoniously blended with modern elements. The bathing area features a spacious bathtub hewn from stone. A graceful and tranquil space to return to after your serene and delightful Kyoto adventures.
Deluxe Suite
Situated on the highest floor of the property, the Deluxe Suite consists of separate living room and bedroom areas. A contemporary interpretation of a Japanese tearoom, the interior design of the suite is a harmonious blend of Japanese design with modern elements. The bathing area features a spacious bathtub hewn from stone. Presidential Suite
Located on the highest floor of the property and measuring 213m2, the Presidential Suite at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto is one of the most spacious suite of rooms in Kyoto. With separate living room and bedroom areas, the suite also features a dining area and pantry that can seat up to 10 people in comfort. Thermal Spring
One of the great pleasures of a visit to Kyoto is experiencing an onsen thermal spring, and here you can immerse yourself in these healing baths, in a calming environment punctuated by the sound of running water. Let the natural spring water soak away all of your stresses and strains, so you can attain complete relaxation. Bathers are asked to use swimwear when bathing at the Thermal Spring.
Private Onsen
Indulge in a uniquely Japanese experience — authentic and completely private onsen bathing. Our private onsen is over 100m², complete with an enclosed wet living space, along with a dedicated Japanese garden. The perfect place to enjoy a memorable experience unique to Japan. Please note that the Private Onsen is for registered hotel guests only. Guests can make use of in-room dining during their time at the Private Onsen.

Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto is home to several pieces of artistic, cultural and historical significance — let one of our Ambassadors take you on a tour of the property, highlighting items both small and not-so-small, explaining what they are, how they were made and why they remain relevant today. Starting with the Kajiimiya Gate at the entranceway to the property, we will also stop by the SHIKI-NO-MA room, which contains many items and features with a significant connection to the Mitsui family.
Transformative Morning Practice — Wellness Breathing

Join us for a wellness breathing session led by an instructor, beginners welcome. We will gather on the elegant wooden engawa garden-viewing corridor of the SHIKI-NO-MA room for an opportunity to be reinvigorated and energized as the morning sun warms the flora and fauna of our beautiful Japanese garden.
Afternoon tea at the registered Important Cultural Asset — The Former Shimogamo Villa of the Mitsui Family

This elegant villa — designated as an Important Cultural Asset in 2011 — is located in the Shimogamo district of Kyoto and has a historic connection to the Mitsui Family. The Shimogamo Villa is a prime example of a classic Kyoto property constructed for this family of successful industrialists. The afternoon tea experience is held on the second floor — a private space not open to the public — where delightful confectionery is prepared by our hotel chef. (This experience is jointly hosted by the Shimogamo Villa Management Consortium)
A Special Morning of Zen at Taizo in, Myoshinji Temple
- Duration: approx. 90 minutes
- (Allow around 40 minutes travel time to/from Taizo in Temple, part of the Myoshinji complex.)
- * Please note that reservations need to be made a minimum of seven days prior to the date of the experience.
Japan’s largest zen temple complex is Myoshinji, with over 40 subtemples in its substantial grounds. One of the most renowned and well established subtemples is Taizo in, home to one of Japan’s oldest ink paintings, Catching Catfish with a Gourd ( hyōnen zu ), painted by Josetsu in 1413, which is a National Treasure of Japan, as well as the dry garden designed by a painter of the Muromachi period, Kanō Motonobu. The yoko en pond garden is a Japanese style garden with a path around a central pond. It is the perfect location for an introduction to zazen sitting meditation, followed by a special asa gayu breakfast made in the Buddhist shojin vegan tradition by Ajiro.
* Please note that during certain times of the year, as well as the period over new year, temples do become rather busy, and it may not be possible to offer this experience at those times.

Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto is located on the site of Kyoto home of the Kitake, the executive branch of the Mitsui Family. Recognizing this important part of our heritage, SHIKI-NO-MA is a faithful yet modern reconstruction of part of the former Mitsui home, constructed from Japanese cypress. SHIKI-NO-MA can be used for a variety of purposes, such as exclusive dining events and tea ceremony gatherings.
