Lutetia Paris
Paris, France
Paris, France
The hotel opened in 1910, built by the founders of famous Parisian department store Le Bon Marché and was an instant hit with the city’s creatives. Irish author James Joyce is even said to have written part of his seminal novel “Ulysses” while staying here. Originally built to house the merchants and clients of the nearby Le Bon Marché, the Lutetia has since become a destination on it’s own merits, particularly for true Parisiennes. Now one of the pre-eminent hotels in the city, the Lutetia partly owes its magnificence to its home – the Left Bank.
One of the leading design hotels in Paris, the Lutetia has been carefully restored and modernised by Jean-Michel Wilmotte. The interior design of the hotel was a complex and exciting challenge: to restore the legendary decor which bridged both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements, and bring it into the 21st century. The architect revived what had become hidden and reinvented what no longer existed. Master craftspeople from across the world were brought in to assist in the restoration of the paintings, stained glass, frescoes, mosaics, sculptures, and more. Rooms have been enlarged – the original total of 233 rooms has been cut to 184. There are some highly coveted suites on offer, including two with access to outdoor terraces with spectacular 360 degree views of the City of Light.
The hotel is 31 km from Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG), and it takes from 45 minutes to 1 hour by car, depending on traffic conditions.
Guests can unwind at the Akasha Holistic Wellbeing Centre, offering massages and treatments, as well as a sauna, stream room, 17-meter long pool and an infinity edge hot tub, perfect for when the hustle and bustle of Paris – or attempting to read “Ulysses” – takes its toll.

For over a century, the Lutetia has been a culinary destination of the Rive Gauche, forever reflecting the refined tastes of its patrons. To dine like a Parisian, it can be said that one requires three things – great food, phenomenal wine, and even better conversation. The Lutetia, as a truly Parisian location, has long been regarded as a place that can ensure you have all three. Whether you prefer the definitive gastronomic stylings of a French brasserie, or indeed the simple pleasure of a not-so-humble drink as you are surrounded by art, the Lutetia is by far the best choice on the Left Bank.
On the corner of Boulevard Raspail and Rue de Sèvres, underneath the Lutetia's glimmering facade, is a stalwart of the Left Bank. When dining in Saint-Germain, the Brasserie Lutetia is an experience on it’s own. With an outdoor terrace and interior that is reminiscent of the hotel’s Art Deco history, Brasserie Lutetia is the place for locals to dine and be seen in. And with a menu of neighbourhood classics and contemporary surprises by Patrick Charvet, it is no wonder Parisiennes flock to this little corner.
Floor-to-ceiling art frescos adorn this sophisticated bar, beloved by Parisians for decades. Stepping inside Bar Joséphine, you may find your head in the clouds – after all, it’s easy to be swept up by the iconic detailing. A bar like no other in Paris, one can enjoy a quiet drink, admire the scenery, or even hold court with friends, all beautifully crafted menu to complement this dreamlike, towering space.
This magnificent salon is bathed in light, accented by the prismatic glass ceiling, painted by Fabrice Hyber. As a casual meeting spot, Le Saint-Germain brings the past into the present. A sprawling salon where one can gather at any time of day, this colourful pantheon for socialising is merely amplified by the menu, an outdoor patio, and Nicolas Guercio’s artistic Tea Time.
Music bar. Cigar lounge. Private club. No matter the title, Aristide is a hideaway. Paying tribute to Saint-Germain’s jazz scene, and named after Aristide Boucicaut (the founder of Le Bon Marché), Bar Aristide reinvents the notion of a private member’s club with smooth jazz and even smoother drinks. Bathed in an electro jazz and down tempo soundtrack, the bar hosts electronic music dj sets by artists from the local and international scene. An exclusive cocktail menu has been created, inspired by alternative music albums from the last thirty years.
