Tea Trails

Nuwara Eliya, Sri-Lanka

Tea Trails is the world’s first tea bungalow resort, and also Sri Lanka’s first Relais & Chateaux resort. This iconic collection of five restored colonial era tea planters’ bungalows offers period furnishings, gracious butler service & gourmet cuisine. Bungalows vary from 4 to 6 rooms & suites. Each of the five bungalows is unique: lakeside Castlereagh, Summerville & Dunkeld, Norwood with panoramic views and Tientsin, the most traditional colonial. The bungalows are connected by walking trails through scenic Ceylon tea gardens. Guests are treated to traditional morning ‘Bed Tea’ to start the day in style.

Twenty six elegant and charming rooms and suites decorated each in a style, ranging from neo-colonial to classic English. Pale tones and natural wood create equilibrium in the midst of a hectic life, as well as wide verandahs, spacious bedrooms, and huge spaces warmed by roaring log fires. Old books, old prints, antique maps, rooms filled with flowers in vibrant colours create the sense of that unique quaintness. Watch the lake and study the garden bees, while reading Somerset Maugham. A dedicated butler service will be available to guests from dawn to dusk to ensure that no request is too much trouble.

Heritage with a contemporary style and non-hotel, private house ambiance is the hallmark of the award-winning Tea Trails experience. Sweeping lawns and pools, a summerhouse, English gardens filled with roses, dew filled agapanthus and spring crocus, without a doubt, make them the best bungalows in Sri Lanka.

Location

Tea Trails bungalows lie nestled among the hills of the Bogawantalawa region in the Dimbula district in south central Sri Lanka. It is here that the créme de la créme of Ceylon teas — the fragrant and delicately flavoured “high growns” flourish.

The five bungalows are located between 2 km and 15km from each other. The nearest major town with a railway station is Hatton, which is 20 minutes away from the nearest Tea Trails bungalow, Summerville and 45 minutes from the farthest, Tientsin. The town of Colombo is 140 km away, the Colombo airport — 170km.

Infrastructure

Enjoy one of our special aromatic baths to begin or complete your day...or just as an indulgence whenever you so please. Choose from Cinnamon Spice, Green Tea, Black Pepper & Orange, Jasmine or a Bergamot & Geranium Bath. Or luxuriate in a spa treatment in the privacy and the comfort of your room. Treatments include the Tea Trails Signature Massage, Deep Tissue Massage & Reflex Zone Therapy.

Scenic walks and hikes, mountainbiking, white water rafting will help you to stay active in the heart of nature. Tennis, swimming, croquet and classic board games all come together for a leisurely lifestyle.

The resort offers the essential Tea Trails experience. Our Resident Tea Planter will demonstrate the age-old tea making process. First, follow the trail of the planters of old Ceylon, as they trekked through the dense jungle looking for the best slopes on which to plant tea. Then on to watch the tea pluckers pick two leaves and a bud with deft hands. Then to the factory where the all-important conversion to “made” black tea happens. The machinery used is of very traditional British design, some as old as 100 years. The process is a very artisanal one, unchanged for a century. The daily complimentary group tour ends with a tasting of different grades of this great brew. You will leave Tea Trails with a newly found appreciation of this wonder herb “Camellia Sinensis” & the terroir of Ceylon Tea.

Dining

Tea Trails is all about the time-honoured planters’ traditions: roaring fires and the comfort of a single malt whisky while the mists roll in or a stiff gin and tonic after a long day’s walk in the tea gardens, accompanied by the spicy flavours of Sri Lankan nibbles to stimulate the appetite.

A unique aspect of Tea Trails’ cuisine is the use of fresh, home grown vegetables, herbs and teas from the surrounding estates. Basil, rosemary, thyme, tarragon, sage, parsley and mint inspire and enliven the chef’s menus every day.

Scrumptious afternoon high teas in gardens are curiously English and exotic at the same time. A fabulously aromatic, authentic Sri Lankan rice and curry for lunch — a definite harbinger of the afternoon siesta. A four-course dinner that is at once contemporary and colonial with its garden-fresh ingredients married with choice wines, best shared in good company.

Rates at Tea Trails are fully inclusive of gourmet meals and drinks, including top shelf spirits and wines. Even service charges, taxes and laundry are included. We won’t bother you with bills...
