Raffles Hotel Singapore

Singapore, Singapore

Renovated 2019

Raffles Hotel Singapore is the flagship property of Raffles Hotels & Resorts. Opened in 1887, it is one of the few remaining great 19th century hotels in the world. No visit to Singapore is complete without a stay at Raffles; tradition demands it.

A century after its opening, the hotel was declared a National Monument by the Singapore Government, after which it underwent a complete restoration at a cost of S$160 million. Today, its colonial architecture is beautifully preserved, allowing it to stand out from the contemporary style of its surrounding neighbours in the business and civic district. Over the years, some of the most famous personalities have walked through the ornate wrought-iron portico. Somerset Maugham, Rudyard Kipling and Michael Jackson are among those who have succumbed to the charms of the Raffles. Today, nothing much has changed with esteemed guests such as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, George Bush, Karl Lagerfeld and Christian Louboutin still choosing to put up at the hotel.

Each of the 103 suites offers original 14-feet high ceilings that hover over elegant period furnishings that exude warmth and character. As the fan spins lazily overhead, be tempted to stretch out on plush sofas that sit beside Oriental carpets, and on teakwood flooring. From providing a front row seat to the nature in the tropics, to paying tribute to its famous guests from the past, right down to being a museum of precious antiques and artifacts, a stay at the Raffles promises to be legendary in its own right.

Location

Located in the heart of Singapore’s business and civic district, just 20 minutes from Changi Airport and a two-minute ride on the Mass Rapid Transit from the bustling Orchard Road shopping strip, Raffles Singapore is within walking distance to Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre — Suntec — and Esplanade — Theatres on the Bay.

Raffles Singapore is Singapore’s most graceful landmark, whose charms include a shopping arcade, romantic courtyards and a Victorian-style theatre, Jubilee Hall, a popular venue for film screenings and performances.

The Boardrooms in the main building serve as the prime meeting rooms for business travellers as the perfect venue for intimate seminars, meetings and workshops. They are equipped with comfortable cushioned chairs, high-speed Internet, as well as audiovisual equipment including but not limited to flipchart, whiteboard with markers and writing materials.

The formality of The Ballroom makes it an elegant venue for celebrations. The architectural detailing of the Main Building, arched openings and French doors are complemented by chandeliers, wall-to-wall carpeting and landscape murals. A charming, Victorian-style theatre playhouse that seats 388 guests, Jubilee Hall is noted as a premier cultural venue for varied repertoires and ceremonies.

Dining

Once a billiard hall, Bar & Billiard Room is today a bar that offers some 400 hand-selected whiskies, with many limited editions and labels imported just for this establishment. Among them include ones from Scotland, Japan and the US. Lending its influence to the cocktail menu, the single malts have also gone on to inspire whisky-based beverages.

Home of the Singapore Sling, this two-storey bar located on the second floor of Raffles Singapore is the place where travellers undergo one of the truest rites of passage of travel. While there, sip on the world-famous pink cocktail, created in 1915 by bar captain Ngiam Tong Boon. The menu offers a mélange of cocktails and non-alcoholic concoctions, together with traditional pub favourites. Long Bar Steakhouse offers grilled prime cuts of beef, quality seafood and a tantalising selection of cold and hot appetisers.

The Northern Indian curry buffet Tiffin Room is a hot favourite with tourists and locals alike. Expect authentic North Indian specialities, including vegetarian curries for non-meat diners. In the afternoon, the restaurant partakes in a classic English tradition and serves High Tea. Ah Teng’s Bakery — delicious pastries, cakes and bread are the highlights of this cosy café.

Dine al fresco at Raffles Courtyard. Framed by the hotel and arcade, it serves up authentic Italian specialties amid swaying tropical palms and white arches. It offers fresh salads, doughy pizzas, al dente pastas and much more. Raffles Grill is a formal dining room serving up contemporary French cuisine.

Named for the literary luminaries who have written about or resided at the hotel, Writers Bar is a tribute to individuals the likes of Noel Coward, Somerset Maugham and Rudyard Kipling. On the menu, an impressive and comprehensive beverage list takes centre stage. Expect premium Scotch, fine wines and spirits, and a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic options.
