Uma Paro

Paro, Bhutan

Uma Paro offers exceptional style in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan. The landscape is dramatic with pine-clad valleys and snow-tipped ranges. Reflecting an understated philosophy of quiet comfort in a unique, culture-rich location, this inland retreat is also dedicated to activity and adventure. Rooms and suites are located in glades planted with azaleas, maximizing views of forest, mountains and the Paro Valley. Materials include handcrafted stone, wood and tiles. The main building, formerly a Bhutanese nobleman’s home, forms the hotel’s heart. Bhutan’s vernacular imprint is felt in timber darkened by smoke from wood fires, and white walls vividly painted by local artists. A stay at Uma Paro is about discovering the essence of Bhutan — its culture, religion and landscape.

Location

Uma Paro sits on a tree-clad hill overlooking Paro. The town is flanked by rice paddies, wheat fields, trout-filled streams and scattered settlements. It is one of the main cultural centers of Bhutan and also where the country’s only airport is located. The surrounding region is known as the Paro Valley, through which the Paro River flows from the watershed in the Jomolhari mountain range. This area is full of monasteries and temples.

Recreation

The awesome power of the mountains is discovered in a place that nurtures mind, body and spirit. Como Shambala Retreat is Uma Paro’s holistic heart, a place to improve wellness with Asian-inspired treatments, including massage and Ayurveda. The retreat also makes extensive use of natural, local ingredients, working with Bhutan’s Hospital of Traditional Medicine. Facilities include treatment rooms, a Hot Stone Bath house, a large indoor pool with outdoor sundeck, steam rooms, a gym and Yoga studio with Paro Valley views. Each of nine villas has its own private therapy suite. Asian-inspired treatments include massage, facials and authentic Ayurvedic therapies – the ancient Indian tradition of healing. The active life is a vital part, featuring Yoga, biking or hiking to keep fit and well. Retreats, led by Visiting Masters, are specialist weeks focusing on subjects such as Yoga and Pilates. Usually they involve five hours of practice daily over a five-day period. Such retreats appeal to single travelers. Uma Paro can arrange a marriage blessing ceremony in the magnificent but intimate main shrine room. About 20 monks will conduct ceremonial prayers, accompanied by drums and horns and cymbals, the occasion lasting about two hours.

Dining

Wholesome cuisine is harvested from fields and forest. The approach to cuisine is modern, light and respectful of local nuances. Menus revive traditional Bhutanese offerings as well as contemporary interpretations of neighboring cuisines. These include Indian dishes from the charcoal tandoor oven. Dishes might include handmade linguine with poached egg, forest mushrooms and new season asparagus. Seasonal breakfast dishes include local buckwheat pancakes with Bumthang honey, lime and maple syrup. Dishes are served according to seasons and availability. The experience is nourishing, relying on fresh produce grown in the surrounding region, from hand-churned butter to wild mushrooms and honey. The hotel also offers classic comfort dishes from pizzas to burgers. Bukhari is housed in a circular pavilion set among tall pine trees with a fireplace at its center. Menus are presided over by New Zealander Jillene Slui, previously with Parrot Cay in the Turks and Caicos. Wines, beers and spirits are offered in the lounge and bar, as well as healthy Como Shambala eating.
