Aman Kyoto

Kyoto, Japan

Opened: November 1, 2019

A remarkable setting, at one with the city's artistic soul. Nestled in the verdant foothills of the symbolic mountain of Hidari Daimonji, Aman Kyoto is a place of untold beauty in the north of Kyoto. Aman Kyoto represents the fruition of a beautiful landscape first conceived as the garden of a textile museum. Whimsical stone pathways curve gently along the forest floor, and stone slabs blanketed in moss serve as the foundations for the resort's architecture. The secluded grounds are part of what was an artistic community that gave rise to the revered Rinpa school of painting some 400 years ago, and are within easy reach of Kyoto's 17 Unesco World Heritage Sites, including the stunning golden temple, Kinkakuji. Aman Kyoto offers spacious and light-filled interiors, paying homage to the traditional Ryokan inn, natural hot springs make onsen an integral part of the property’s wellness offering, and dining that celebrates the unique culinary traditions of Japan using the finest local produce.

Location

Set within easy reach of Kyoto's most important sites, Aman Kyoto is a one hour drive from Osaka International Airport (ITM) and a two hour drive from Kansai International Airport (KIX). The resort can also be reached by a 30-minute drive from Kyoto train station.

Infrastructure

Aman Kyoto’s latticed pavilions are a contemporary homage to the traditional Japanese Ryokan inn, strikingly minimalist in their geometry, and each serving as a window onto their spectacular natural surroundings. The interiors are spacious and light-filled – ingeniously crafted to foster peace, relaxation and contemplation at every turn. The intimate scale of the pavilions and their considered placement within the garden respects, on one hand the simplicity and appropriateness of traditional Japanese architecture, while on the other allows these contemporary buildings to exist and breathe with the landscape, as if it had been contemplated.

Wellness at Aman Kyoto

The hotel offers: outdoor and indoor onsen hot spring bathing facilities, three private treatment suites, relaxing spa lounge, yoga and mindfulness sessions in the garden, treatments incorporating local Japanese healing ingredients and practices.

Mineral hot springs

The mineral-rich water that springs near Aman Kyoto is central to the philosophy at the resort’s Aman Spa. Traditional onsen bathing facilities deliver relaxation and healing in their purest forms, while a range of treatments tap into Japan’s plentiful natural apothecary – including Kyoto green tea, tanba kuromame black beans, local sake and cold-pressed camellia oil. Dating back to the sixth century, Japanese bathing culture initially grew out of Buddhist cleansing rituals. Today the Japanese still enjoy seasonal onsen and herbal baths for their health-giving benefits.

Mindfulness programmes and yoga in nature

Discover the peace that nature can instill with a guided one-day mindfulness programme. This includes the Signature Spa Journey, onsen, a 2-hour hike and a hilltop meditation session followed by a picnic lunch. In the dappled sunlight of a forest glade, tune back into body and mind with a private yoga session, tailored to your needs.

The power of Shiatsu

A speciality at Aman Kyoto, Shiatsu is an intuitive massage technique based on the same principles as acupuncture. Aiming to restore the flow of energy or qi in the body, it is known to improve muscle tone, strengthen immunity and dispel stress.

Aman Skincare

Used in Aman Kyoto’s spa, Aman’s all-natural skincare range is grouped into three unique formulations – Grounding, Purifying and Nourishing. Products are selected to meet various need states in tailored spa treatments, and can be purchased for use at home.

Aman Kyoto Experiences & Adventures

The hidden gardens of Aman Kyoto are the starting point for countless inspiring journeys into the secrets of Japan’s ancient imperial capital. No fewer than 17 awe-inducing Unesco World Heritage sites are within easy reach, and Aman has privileged access to an array of temples and transformative cultural encounters – out of reach for most travellers.

Meditate with Zen Buddhist monks

Taking place in an ancient hall overlooking a beautiful Japanese garden, Aman Kyoto guests can learn and practice the principles of Zen meditation from a local monk, finding a sense of calm in a meaningful, yet light-hearted and engaging process.

Step back in time

Kamishichiken is the oldest of Kyoto’s hanamachi – the ‘flower towns’ of the geishas. With a personal invitation to enter, Aman Kyoto guests can visit an ancient ochaya (tea house) and spend an afternoon and evening with a geiko (the Kyoto term for geisha) or a maiko apprentice, playing ozashiki, drinking tea and enjoying a dance performance and dinner.

Discover Kyoto’s temples

Explore the life of 16th-century master calligrapher, craftsman and artist Honami Koetsu at the Koetsuji Temple, and admire the glorious gardens and gilded architecture of Kinkakuji, the ‘Golden Pavilion’ within walking distance of Aman Kyoto.

Practise the mindful art of Ikebana

In Japan, the practice of flower arrangement is as much as form of moving meditation as it is an aesthetic art. Aman guests are invited to spend time with an Ikebana expert, transforming seasonal flowers into structurally magnificent arrangements of colour and form. For guests wishing to explore another dimension of Japanese botanical art, Aman Kyoto’s gardeners can offer instruction in the discipline of miniature garden design.

Miniature Japanese Garden

In general, Japanese gardens are an arrangement of wood, stone, moss, soil, and waterscapes. It is truly a living art. Aman Kyoto guests can touch the moss, soil and stone to enjoy the experience of making an original pot garden. Aman Kyoto’s gardener will offer instruction in the discipline of miniature garden design.

Dining

The Living Pavilion by Aman

This convivial dining space rests at the heart of Aman Kyoto, offering elegant interiors and a bar arranged around a central fireplace. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open onto an ornate terrace, with beautiful views of the surrounding gardens and forest. Open throughout the day and into the night, the restaurant serves both home-cooked Kyoto-style cuisines, and innovative and comforting Western dishes.

Taka-An

Open to both Aman guests and non-residents, Taka-an offers an invitation to experience the authentic Japanese art of hospitality, which is characterised by balance and equilibrium – and where the texture of the tableware is as important as the flavour of the food on the plate. In this fastidiously curated environment, every element – atmosphere, design and cuisine – work together, in harmony.

Three centuries ago, the artist and polymath Honami Koetsu helped shape the culture and creative life of the Takagamine district of Kyoto, and from there, Japan as a whole. Taka-an is a culinary homage to his legacy – his artistic legacy explored and expressed through food and hospitality.

Picnic in the gardens

In spring, stroll through the gardens with a picnic hamper, then settle in a peaceful glade with a picnic blanket and cushions, and enjoy the delicious meal prepared just for you. Picnic in the gardens will be available for both resident and non-residents guests from Spring 2020.

Afternoon tea

Served daily, Aman Kyoto’s afternoon tea introduces guests to flower-like Wagashi, traditional Japanese confections made of mochi, anko and fruits. Kyoto Matcha is freshly prepared and served as a finale.
