Dining

George V Dining Room

Ashford Castle has been hosting distinguished guests for almost 800 years – one of the most prominent being the Prince of Wales, who subsequently became George V of England. In honour of his visit in 1905, the Guinness family built a special dining room which still bears his name proudly to this day.

The graceful setting, with rich, panelled walls and twinkling Waterford Crystal chandeliers bestows a grand sense of occasion. The resident pianist plays softly in the background while you relax and enjoy exceptional dishes from the kitchen of acclaimed Chef Philippe Farineau, recently awarded two rosettes by the AA Hospitality Awards, combined with much loved recipes of Beatrice Tollman and complemented by a fine selection of wines from Chief Sommelier, Robert Bowe.

Afternoon Tea

The long established tradition of Afternoon Tea has been wonderfully preserved at Ashford Castle since 1868 - you’ll notice the original silver tea set displayed in the Connaught Room, which was presented to Lord and Lady Ardilaun to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in 1896. With spectacular views from the comfort of the castle’s elegant interior, take your time to savour every delicious moment.

The Afternoon Tea menu offers guests a wide selection of speciality teas or perhaps a glass of Champagne, delicate finger sandwiches, warm freshly baked scones with lashings of cream and home-made jam, not to mention the tasty pastries. It’s the perfect way to spend a leisurely afternoon with friends.

The Dungeon

As its name would suggest, the unique setting located on the lower ground floor of the castle invites diners to enjoy a range of satisfying dishes from the bistro-style menu with a focus on traditional Irish cuisine beneath the historic curved stone ceiling. Together with a relaxed ambience, it makes for a wonderful and memorable dining experience.

The Castle Wine Cellars

The Wine Cellars at Ashford Castle offer private wine tastings and wonderful wine dinners in the secret passageways of the castle, which were unearthed during recent renovations. The old servants' entrance was originally a coal bunker and walkway underneath the castle, where the servants used to come in and get their coal buckets to take up to the rooms. It has now been transformed and the 16th Century tunnels provide three unique private spaces with a cosy ambience and soft lighting and using a Coravin system for tasting expensive bottles without having to take the cork out, keeping the wine fresh for longer.

The Prince of Wales Bar

Built in the late 1800s, the bar is to this day reminiscent of its captivating past, with its opulent fabrics, fine wood panelling, traditional furnishings and original fireplace creating a warm and welcoming ambience – the perfect place to enjoy your favourite tipple or a pint of Guinness. In 1905 the bar was visited by the Prince of Wales, who subsequently became George V of England.

Stanley's

A warm Irish welcome with an American twist awaits at Stanley’s, where a beautiful mahogany-and-marble breakfast bar overlooks a stunning open kitchen. Expect lively conversation as you watch the Chef prepare the very best signature dishes, including the Patty Melt hamburger, the grilled Black Monterey Jack cheese sandwich and the Elvis sandwich, a combination of peanut butter, banana and streaky bacon that should be tried at least once.

Cullen's at the Cottage

This traditional thatched cottage, which used to be Cong Cinema, (showing films on Tuesday's and Thursday's, and was the first place to show The Quiet Man even before it was shown in Hollywood), today provides a relaxed dining experience with a casual dress code in which to enjoy international and local dishes inspired by the owner Beatrice Tollman, including delicious signature dish 'Chicken Peri Peri'. It is slow cooked in the rotisserie oven in the main dining area, so mouth-watering aromas greet you as soon as you enter the restaurant.

The Billiards Room

Retreat to the Billiards Room and enjoy a game of billiards, sink into comfy chairs with a glass of your favourite tipple or enjoy delicious Cuban and Irish tapas served daily from 5.00pm - 10.30pm. Relax with a newspaper and catch up on the day's affairs. Open to residents only from 3.30pm, the traditional elegance of the Billiards Room, with its grand assortment of antique furniture and furnishings is a most welcome addition to the castle. A selection of Mr. Tollman's limited edition cigars are available. There is also The Cigar Terrace and different amazing places to eat and drink at in the Castle.
